2019 Races

Jeff Galloway 13.1 Relay
Atlanta, GA – 12/15

Suellen and I teamed up to do the half marathon relay, she ran the first 6 miles and I ran the last 7.1. It was a pretty day, and we had a fun time. We had special “snowbird” outfits Suellen made:

Barb’s 5k
Atlanta, GA – 12/14

First race of the Jeff Galloway 13.1 weekend. I ran pretty hard (for me), and finished in 22:03. Still trying to get my 5k times back under 21, but it is my off season. I was first woman overall and 6th finisher.

Last Call Half Marathon
Waukesha, WI – 12/1

Why not throw in an extra half marathon this year? It was cold and windy, but neat to see lots of running friends out there. I ran easy for the first half and then picked it up a little the second half, for a 1:45:36 and 2nd in my age group.

Berbee Derby 10k
Madison, WI – 11/28

The local turkey trot, always a fun time. I ran 46:03 on a pretty hilly course, and was leading the world’s smallest parade in my marching band outfit :). I was first in my age group.

Hoboken Turkey Trot 5k
Hoboken, NJ – 11/23

While visiting NYC, we took the train across the Hudson River to Hoboken for a little turkey trot fun, the week before Thanksgiving. I ran with Suellen, and we got a great photo with the the NYC skyline in the background.

Elf Run 10k
Brookfield, WI – 11/17

Back to back races this weekend, I headed over by Milwaukee to do the Elf Run. It was a hilly course, but I enjoyed it. I ran in my “Focal Flame elf” outfit. I had a time of 45:07, first in my age group.

Candy Cane 5k
Germantown, WI – 11/16

My step-daughter did her first wheelchair 5k in a few years at this race, and I ran it and then cheered for her. I ran a 21:58, and was second woman overall. It was great to see her out there again.

Pumpkin Run 5k
Oconomowoc, WI – 10/27

Ran this with Suellen, we were dressed as Crowley and Aziraphale from Good Omens. Perfect Halloween costumes!

Detroit Marathon Weekend – 1 mile, 5k and marathon relay
Detroit, MI – 10/19 & 10/20

I went with a group of friends to Detroit for the marathon weekend, where I ran the competitive 1 mile (6:40), then fifteen minutes later the 5k (21:42), and then the next day I ran miles 12.5-22 of the marathon as a relay. It was quite a challenge running the mile & 5k back to back! I was surprised to be 2nd masters woman in the mile, and top 3 age group in the 5k. It was a fun weekend.

St George Marathon
St. George, Utah – 10/5/2019

A beautiful race in southwest Utah, fast downhill course and it was near my family. I ran a 3:35:48, my fastest marathon time since I turned 50! And of course I was dressed as the Energizer Bunny.

Brewers Mini Marathon (half marathon)
Milwaukee, WI – 9/28/2019

A great event at Miller Park in Milwaukee, we wore our League of Their Own outfits. I paced a friend to help her break two hours, and she did great, finishing in 1:58:43. We got to run around the warning track of the baseball field at the end 🙂

Spa Girl Lost Pines Triathlon
Bastrop, TX – 9/21/2019

A hot! humid! hilly! sprint triathlon just southeast of Austin. We were in town for the UT football game (hook’em!), thought this would be fun. It was neat event, just challenging with the heat. Swim in the lazy river at the Lost Pines resort (650m), bike through the hill country (18 miles) and run along the golf course (3 miles) with one super big hill. I enjoyed it, and ended up the first woman overall in the sprint distance.

Labor Day Dash 10K
Madison, WI – 9/2/2019

Small local race in Madison, on the classic Arboretum loop. It was crazy humid that morning, so I didn’t run very fast, 45 minutes and change. But I was the first overall woman, and got some homemade rice krispie treats as a prize!

Ironman 70.3 Traverse City
Traverse City, MI – 8/25/2019

Second half iron distance triathlon of the summer, it was the first year for this race in Traverse City. It was a beautiful location, and the weather was pretty much perfect. A good swim, hilly but fun bike course, and a ton of spectators on the run course. I executed my race plan really well, and ran a strong half marathon at the end of it, only falling off my pace the last few miles. My final time was 5:28:36, which placed me second in my age group! And that qualified me for a spot at Ironman 70.3 Worlds in Taupo, New Zealand in 2020!

USA Triathlon Nationals – Olympic Distance
Cleveland, OH – 8/10/2019

I was excited to get back to racing USAT events, and decided a couple months ago to do Nationals. The swim was shortened to 750m, due to strong currents in Lake Erie. I had a great race, and felt super strong all the way through the run. My time was 2:12:49, good for 9th place in my division! That earned me a spot on age group Team USA for ITU Worlds in Edmonton, AB next summer.

Hightail Quarter Marathon
Anchorage, AK – 7/21/2019

Visiting Anchorage before going on an Alaskan cruise, why not find a race! This was a neat women’s only race in downtown Anchorage, on some of the bike paths. I ran it dressed as a raven, in theme with the main sponsor, Skinny Raven Sports. My time was 48:56 for the 6.5 mile race, good for 6th overall and 1st in my age group (and I think first woman over 40!)

Door County Half Iron
Egg Harbor, WI – 7/14/2019

I hadn’t raced a half ironman in ten years! This was a gorgeous course, and we had a pretty nice weather day (hot on the run, as usual). The hills on the run course did me in, so I was a little off my goal time, but I was still happy with a 5:25:56, 2nd place in my age group and 15th overall woman.

Missoula Half Marathon
Missoula, MT – 6/30/2019

Another race with Suellen, for her 50th state to race in (plus D.C.). It was a beautiful day and very nice course.

Cornfield Cornfield 10k
Omaha, NE – 6/15/2019

I ran this with Suellen, for her 49th state to race in. We had some fun scarecrow & crow costumes, and although she had a tough race she finished and we’re on to Montana in two weeks for her 50th state!

Elkhart Lake Olympic Triathlon
Elkhart Lake, WI – 6/8/2019

Warmup race for my half ironman later this summer. It was a pretty day, although got a little warm later. The swim was super long (1800m instead of 1500m), and I fell off pace the last few miles of the bike. But I was happy with my time of 2:42:00, and was first in my age group.

Colorado 13er Half  Marathon
Boulder, CO – 6/2/2019

Great race at altitude, as part of the Skirt Sports Ambassador weekend. I was running it mostly as a training run, but the hill and altitude were no joke. Running “easy” was hard 🙂. I ran 1:47:56, 4th woman overall.

Greenbrier Half Marathon
White Sulphur Springs, WV – 5/11/2019

A vacation race at the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. I was running it mostly as a partial tempo workout, so I did the first 4 miles easy, then picked it up, and ran the last couple miles hard. I was happy with my time, 1:44:07, considering it was somewhat hilly and very humid. And I was surprised to come in 2nd overall woman! So that was cool.

Lake Monona 20k
Madison, WI – 5/4/2019

One of my favorite local races. And this year it was on Star Wars Day (May the Fourth!), so I ran as Luke Skywalker carrying Yoda 🙂 It was a nice day, sunny and didn’t get too warm until the end. I ran easy to start, finished fast, and had a final time of 1:37:38. I was first in my age group.

Crazylegs 8k
Madison, WI – 4/27/2019

I haven’t done this big local race in 13 years! It actually snowed on us for a bit, but otherwise the weather was pretty good for running. My recent training is paying off, I ran a 35:31, first place in my age group. That time was only 10 seconds slower than when I ran it in 2006!

Southern Utah Half Marathon
St George, UT – 4/13/2019

Visiting family in St George, and I found this great half marathon. Beautiful scenery down through the red rocks and the Virgin River, downhill (especially the first 3 miles), and fast. The weather was perfect, and I ran very well. Final time 1:37:19, good for 1st women’s masters and 8th overall woman.

Shamrock Shuffle 10k
Madison, WI – 3/16/2019

Definitely a yearly tradition, the local 10k near St Patrick’s Day. We had several people from the company I work for (Fetch Rewards) running, so I had some running shirts made for us. I had a good run, 45:51, first in my age group and 10th woman overall.

Snowshoe Scurry 10k
Madison, WI – 2/3/2019

After a week in the sun, back to cold Wisconsin, where I ran a snowshoe 10k. It was actually 40 degrees, so wore a skirt. I was dressed a penguin, as one does.

Caribbean Running Cruise
1/25/2019 – 2/1/2019

An awesome 7 day cruise through the western Caribbean, on the Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas. I ran a 5k in Miami, a 5k on the ship, a crazy hilly trail run in Roatan, Honduras, a 10k in Costa Maya, and a 10k in the Bahamas. Lots of sun and running, it was the best.

Disney World Marathon
Orlando, FL 1/13/2019

The final race of the Dopey Challenge! I was pretty sore from running the 10k hard and the half marathon a little harder than I should have, but I just wanted to enjoy the race and get lots of pictures. I think I had 30 photo stops during the race, I hit every official one plus a few more. The best was the stop with Judy Hopps, who matched my costume. She was so excited when she saw me! My final time was 4:20:31.

Disney World Half Marathon
Orlando, FL 1/12/2019

My goal for this and the marathon were to take it easy and do all the character photo stops. I think I ended up with 18-20 photos by the time I was done! My Oswald the Lucky Rabbit costume ran great, and got lots of cheers. I ran a 1:57:26.

Disney World 10k
Orlando, FL 1/11/2019

I raced this one, as Suellen wasn’t feeling well and I couldn’t run it with her. I stopped for 4-5 character photos and still ran a 47:21, good enough to win my age group! I was Minnie Mouse for this race:

Disney World 5k
Orlando, FL 1/10/2019

Walked this with Suellen, just for fun. It was the first race of the Dopey Challenge for me. We wore our Jungle Cruise skipper costumes, which were quite the hit!

Snowshoe Scurry 10k
Verona, WI 1/5/2019

Sadly, no snow, so it was a trail run. I did this as a warmup for the Disney races, and came in 2nd woman overall (it was a pretty small race).L
